Initial Teacher Training: Summer Term Updates

As we move into the summer term, it is an important period for both trainees and schools involved in Initial Teacher Training (ITT). Across the sector, there continues to be a strong focus on recruitment, retention and ensuring high-quality school-based training experiences for new entrants to the profession.

National ITT Recruitment Picture

The latest national ITT census shows continued monitoring of recruitment against teacher supply targets, with particular attention on shortage subjects and regional needs.

Recent Department for Education data also indicates a reduction in postgraduate trainee targets for 2026–27, largely linked to falling pupil rolls in some phases. While this may ease pressure in some areas, recruitment in subjects such as physics, computing and languages remains a priority nationally.

School-Centred ITT and Local Partnerships

School-centred routes into teaching continue to play a significant role in developing the next generation of teachers. Teaching School Hubs remain central to supporting ITT, the Early Career Teacher Entitlement and wider professional development across England.

Many hubs and local providers are now actively recruiting for September 2026 cohorts, with open events, school experience opportunities and application support taking place throughout the summer term.  See the local choice page on our website for information on individual providers.

Networking Opportunities

Generate Teaching School Hub provides termly networking events for local providers.  This is a great way to share ideas, discuss current trends and support local colleagues involved in initial teacher training.  Our next event is Thursday, 11th June 4-5pm and will be online.  If you are interested in joining us email lhumphries@wpat.uk

Focus on Placement Quality and Mentoring

This term provides an important opportunity for schools to:

  • support trainees as they prepare for transition into ECT roles
  • ensure mentoring remains developmental and manageable
  • celebrate trainee successes across the year
  • encourage reflective practice ahead of final assessments

Preparing Trainees for Employment

Summer term is also a key period for trainees securing their first teaching posts. Schools may be offering supportive transition opportunities, including induction visits, curriculum familiarisation and early engagement with mentors and departments.

Looking Ahead

As the academic year progresses, ITT providers will continue working closely with schools to support recruitment across the profession. The summer term offers an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of trainees and mentors alike as they prepare for the next stage of their professional journey.
