New Writing Framework Launched by the DfE

31 Jul 25

The new writing framework provides comprehensive guidance for primary school teachers and leaders on planning and teaching writing effectively, from reception through to the end of key stage 2. This evidence-based resource aims to enable all children to become confident and fluent writers, share their ideas and find their voice in the classroom and beyond.

The framework focuses on early language development, highlighting how learning to write directly benefits pupils' speaking, reading, and thinking skills. The guidance emphasises that writing is a complex skill requiring deliberate instruction, with sentence construction, handwriting, spelling, and spoken language development as crucial foundations.

English Hubs will be running a series of webinars to talk about the framework with schools from September 2025. More information on these events will be published nearer the time.
