Expanding Support Through English Hubs

31 Jul 25

Since 2018, English Hubs have become vital literacy champions, working with schools to support pupils in reception and key stage 1 with phonics and early reading. They are now expanding their work through the following initiatives:

Secondary hubs pilot

From September 2025, 31 English Hubs will pilot expansion into secondary schools providing funding, tools, and literacy specialist support. This will create valuable opportunities for primary and secondary schools to collaborate more closely and ensure smoother transitions for children.

Unlocking Reading programme

The Unlocking Reading programme, delivered by FFT Education on behalf of DfE, will help boost reading in every secondary school, by providing evidence-based strategies to support individual readers and foster a strong whole-school reading culture. This will be available for schools to use early next year.

Reading fluency

English Hubs will launch 'Reading Fluency: The Bridge to Comprehension' in 2025/26, a six-module CPD programme helping primary schools enhance reading fluency in key stage 2.

Reception expansion

From September 2026, English Hubs will provide reception-specific support with training and funding to improve the teaching of reading, writing, and early language. Selected schools will receive additional tailored support from literacy specialists.
