New training programme launched to strengthen Reception teaching

A new professional development programme designed to support high-quality teaching in Reception classrooms has been launched, offering schools an opportunity to further enhance early years provision and pupil outcomes.

Excellence in Reception Teaching, funded and accredited by the Department for Education, is aimed at experienced Reception teachers and those moving into the role. The programme focuses on strengthening classroom practice, deepening understanding of child development and improving outcomes for children at a critical stage in their education.

Spanning approximately 20 weeks over two school terms, the course combines flexible online learning with live facilitated sessions and structured classroom application. Participants receive mentor support, structured feedback and opportunities for professional dialogue, ensuring that learning is embedded in day-to-day practice.

The programme emphasises the importance of Reception as a foundation stage of education, where children develop key skills in communication, early literacy and mathematics, self-regulation and social relationships. It supports teachers to refine everyday decision-making in areas such as planning, assessment, classroom routines, inclusion and working with families.

With a strong emphasis on evidence-informed practice, the programme enables teachers to make small, manageable improvements that can be tested, refined, and sustained over time—benefiting both individual practitioners and wider school provision.
