New screen time guidance for parents of under-5s

1 Apr 26

The UK government has published its first official guidance to help parents manage screen time for children under five. The advice recommends that children under two should avoid screen use except for interactive activities such as video calls, while those aged two to five should be limited to no more than one hour per day.

The guidance emphasises the importance of how screens are used, encouraging high-quality, age-appropriate content and shared experiences with adults rather than passive or solo viewing. It also advises avoiding fast-paced or social media-style content and keeping mealtimes and bedtimes screen-free.

Parents are encouraged to prioritise activities that support early development, such as reading, play, and conversation and to model healthy screen habits themselves. The recommendations take a precautionary approach, reflecting concerns about the potential impact of excessive screen use on young children’s language, social and emotional development.
